What is the Recovery Time after Dental Implant Surgery in Singapore?
on May 8, 2014
Recovering from dental implant surgery is a process that occurs in two basic phases, initial recovery– or the time it will take for you to get back to your daily activities – and osseointegration – the time it will take for bone tissue to heal and bond with your new dental implants. The time it takes to complete these phases of recovery differs from one patient to another, depending upon overall health, age and the details of the dental implant procedure, but the average Singapore patient can expect initial healing to be complete within a couple of weeks, while the healing and growth of bone tissue can take several months.
Initial Recovery: What to Expect Immediately After Surgery
During the first 24 hours after your dental implant surgery in Singapore, you can expect the surgical sites to be sore, you may experience some light bleeding, there will be some swelling in your face and possibly some bruising. If you have had IV sedation to ensure a comfortable procedure, you may feel drowsy for a few hours after surgery. Your Singapore oral surgeon will advise you to rest during that initial 24 hours, advice that you should follow, since over-exerting yourself can increase pain, swelling and bleeding and may increase your risk of complications.
Over the next two weeks, pain and swelling should steadily decrease as the soft tissues affected by surgery heal. You'll be on a soft-food diet for at least the first week or two after dental implant surgery to avoid irritating surgical sites and disturbing your new dental implants, and your Singapore oral surgeon will give you instructions on oral hygiene and care after surgery to avoid infection. While most patients are able to return to work and other routine activities within 2 or 3 days after surgery, it is important to avoid strenuous physical activity – such as heavy lifting or sports – for 10 to 14 days to ensure complete and proper healing.
Long-Term Recovery: Bone Healing and Osseointegration
While the initial phase of soft tissue healing is generally complete within two weeks, healing of the underlying bone and development of the bond between your dental implants and the jawbone will take longer – between 3 and 6 months for the average Singapore patient. During that time, several follow-up visits may be scheduled to keep track of progress.
What You Can Do To Minimize Recovery Time
There are steps you can take to promote efficient healing and osseointegration, minimizing your recovery time after dental implant surgery. Following your Singapore oral surgeon's post-surgical oral hygiene and care instructions carefully is very important, since doing so can help avoid complications that, should they occur, can impede the healing process. Avoiding trauma and irritation at implant sites is essential, so be sure to follow dietary restrictions carefully. Good nutrition is also key to a quick recovery, so be sure to provide your body with an ample supply of proteins, vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients it will need to fuel the healing process via a healthy, well-balanced diet.
